I’ve worked at president level at AT&T. I’m a reserve commander in the French navy. And now I teach a wide range of very able and experienced professionals on executive education programs at HEC Paris. But, when it comes down to lessons in leadership, I’ve learned more from the toughest people I’ve ever known - the French Marine Commandos.
The French Navy likes to make the very best of its people and consequently I have found myself being asked to use my corporate experience to help commando units make the wisest decisions in highly stressful situations. And then being asked to go training with them so that I really understood what those stressful situations were actually like.
Not an experience I’m ever likely to forget.
So what lessons did this rare (and distinctly painful) combination of corporate and military insight generate?
• Embrace your limitations — You are not a member of the Avengers or the X-Men. You are just another human being, albeit one with the guts and commitment to take on a leadership position. Asking for help and support is not a sign of weakness it’s actually a sign of wisdom and strength.
